Old Wool Window

I got some old windows and decided I needed to put them to good use, so I made up a wool pattern and we had a class at the shop.  Wool is so fun to work with since you can have raw edges that don’t ravel.  There are some beautiful wool pieces out there as well.  One of my favorite shops I just discovered is the Woolen Needle!  Wonderful people that will help you there in store or via their website.  Back to the window…  An easy project that you can get very creative with.  In this one I just used a black background fabric and then primitively stitched all around my cut out wool pieces.

If you have an old window, try a bulletin board, chalk board, throw some cool old hooks on the bottom, paint it, leave it as is…endless possibilities.  Add some character to your walls!

Blessed Sunday!

I love Sundays!!!  They are my day of rest and rejuvenation!  I allow myself to do whatever I would like, since many times it is my only day of the week off.  This frustrates my poor husband terribly, since there is usually much housework to be done, but a girl has to do what a girl has to do.  So today I played.  Here are a couple things to show for it.

This was a simple project that I think has old charm and sentimental value.  I took an old picture of Tony’s grandma Max and cut out part of the cover of one of her old books.  I used an exacto knife and then used a little glue to put the picture in place.  Her formal name, and her age and weight are listed on the inside cover.  I might add an old fashioned tag to the outside of the cover that lists some details about her, but for now this is what I did.

I created this with some wool I had in my stash.  Half of the wool I bought at thrift stores (men’s wool suit jackets and wool blankets), and the other bits of wool I bought at quilting shops.  The inspiration for this was the robin’s nest right outside out kitchen window this spring that hatched three successful eggs.  The birds really pop on the gray and brown background and I’m excited to put some texture on the next with brown yarn and to frame it all out with a homemade picture frame.  I’m not exactly sure where it will hang yet, but with all the new paint colors in our house I am sure it will find a good wall.

Have a wonderful week!

Needle Felting Frivolity

Here’s a fun little project that doesn’t take long–Needle Felting! This involves taking little bits of raw wool, the colored balls you see, and pounding them into a piece of felted wool. You pound on a piece of foam with long needles…you can see these on the left side of the picture. You can create all sorts of images just by shaping the raw wool. If you are a knitter, it is fun to try this with some of your wool yarns. Just unwind the yarn and break it into shorter strands–punch away.

How can I be making a snowman you ask…well Christmas in July of course! This will be a cute little gift topper come wrapping time in December!

I got this as a kit at Willow Wood Market in Bemidji MN.

Green Mittens

These are my “green” mittens! I made these for my friend, Ellie, out of old thrift store sweaters. Very fun and easy! Each pair you make has unique character and brings a bit of a smile! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! FYI–I used the pattern out of a book called “Warm Fuzzies” by Betz White. Good book!
